Workshop at Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) conference 2012:
Designing Musical Interactions for Mobile Systems
Tuesday 12 June 2012, Culture Lab Newcastle

This workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in techniques and methods for creating interactive mobile music systems. This will draw upon a wide range of disciplines, from interaction design, industrial design and programming to diverse creative practices such as media art, composition and music performance.
The main objective of the workshop is to identify and define the interactive social and musical affordances of mobile technologies. The workshop will facilitate the sharing of knowledge between researchers and practitioners in design activities. It will result in a set of interface design models for creating rich musical interaction that push the capabilities of present day mobile phone technologies.
The workshop will seek to address the following questions:
• What is the current state of the art of mobile app development?
• What are the possibilities and limitations of mobile devices in this field?
• To what extent do mobile systems allow us to design new ways of interactions?
• Are mobiles necessarily tethered to desktop development environments?
• What are the specific affordances of the mobile that differentiate it from – and make design tasks different than- computer-based music systems?
• What kinds of peripherals – MIDI keyboards, Arduino interfaces, and outboard sensors – can be used to extend the musical palette of general purpose mobile phones?
• How are musicians integrating mobile devices into their existing stage set-ups and performance practices?
The workshop will consist of a presentation of position papers (15), demonstrations of existing systems, break out discussion and coding sprints, and an evening performance event. Participants will be asked to prepare a 2-page position paper and a 5- 10 minute presentation. The presentation should describe some of the issues they face in designing for or working creatively with music systems on mobile devices. A Q&A and discussion session will take place after all presentations have been given, and after hands-on session to consider everything together. Propositions for demos, break out activities, code tutorials, art installations, and concert performances should also use the position paper template, clearly indicating the type of submission (Demo, Breakout, Tutorial, Event).
